One of Buea’s biggest villages, Bonakanda, situated
right at the foot of Mountain Cameroon, now has a traditional ruler. This
follows decades of fierce fighting among several parties over whom to ascend to
the vacant chieftaincy stool.
Consultative talks conducted by the village’s
kingmakers and supervised by the Divisional Officer (Sub-prefect) for Buea,
Paul Kouam Wokam, late last year finally saw 49-year old Emmanuel Ndongo
Molonge chosen as third class chief of the village after which a Prefectoral order
was issued him.

He was coronated Friday 5th June 2015 in
a heavily-attended ceremony that brought together huge crowds of villagers, several
Buea chiefs as well as other guests of honour.
The population waited impatiently as Chief Ndongo
underwent ritual rites in a secret shrine for several minutes before being
led, amidst deafening applause, to the ceremonial ground where he was seated in
a specially built shed.
The ceremony then unfolded in strict traditional
fashion during which he was handed the special cap and staff of authority by
other Chiefs. At the end, he made a round of the event ground, waving and greeting
his people as they cheered him up.
The Buea Chiefs’ Conference President, Chief Johnson
Njoke Njombe of Wokaka village, while addressing the occasion, congratulated newly enthroned Chief Ndongo
for his tenacity. He urged him to forgive all those who fought against him and
incorporate them into his working plan for the general good of the village. To
the villagers, he beseeched them to collaborate with and support their dynamic Chief
in all village development endeavours.
One elite of the village and journalist with Cameroon’s
state Media, CRTV, Matute Menyoli, also took the floor to corroborate Chief
Njombe. He sustained that having a Chief now meant the beginning of greater
things to happen to Bonakanda. He thus called for unity among the active forces of
the village which he stressed is indispensable in driving the village’s growth.
Chief Ndongo, in a press interview, was quick to
outline his priority; “…our main priority now is to develop the village. I am calling on those who opposed me to come
so that we can live together as one people keeping aside our differences…” he
said. He also acknowledged that his role would, among other things, entail the
maintenance of peace and order as well as consolidate socio-economic growth.
Chief Emmanuel Ndongo Molonge was born in 1966, is
married and a father of seven. He is industrious. He is a farmer, hunter, teacher
as well as broadcaster with his village community radio, Radio Bonakanda.
Currently, he works at the Inspectorate of Basic Education in Buea.
